Studio

There is a group I belong to on Flickr where you can see pictures of peoples studios. I love to see them. Some are a chaotic mess. Some are neat and tidy. Some have paint splattered everywhere. Some not a drop. My studio area is actually in a part of the house that is open to everything. For that reason, I have to keep it fairly tidy. I also have an art closet. This used to be my source of messiness until recently. I realized I could not find anything in it and there was no room to make any new work. Here are some pictures of my art studio area, which also doubles as my general office area. I still have a dream of someday having a studio where I can be as messy as I want to and just close the door so no one can see it.

A work in progress, a recently finished piece, an abandoned collage, and some brushes that have probably been sitting in water way too long.

Undercurrent

Title: Undercurrent
Size: 12 x 24 x 1 in
Materials: Acrylics, modeling paste, masonite
Year: 2008

This is the first painting from a new series I am doing called Underworlds. More texture, more blues, more greens. I guess my stint with browns and yellows was short lived. This and other pieces are available to purchase through my Etsy shop.

Charcoal

These are some of my charcoal drawings. I prefer to use charcoal over pencil. I just like the way it glides over the paper and how it feels on your fingers. Pencil just does not have the same fluidity and feels harsh on the paper to me. To puchase any of these drawings, visit my Etsy shop.

Venous

Title: Venous
Materials: Acrylic on Canvas
Size: 24 x 18 in
Year: 2007

Last week was a particularly busy week with little time for painted musings from the gods. I have a few things started but nothing finished. One thing this blog has forced me to do is actually finish my pieces. I had a habit of abandoning them way too quickly. This is one from last year. It happens to be hanging near the front door and always gets a reaction from visitors. Some people are drawn to it and others are disturbed. My mother in particular shudders every time she sees it. I have jokingly offered to make her something similar, and she begs me not to. I explained to her that not everything is "pretty", although this is one of my favorites, and I find it to be beautiful.

Robert Stackhouse Anyone?

For the past few weeks, I have been a volunteer helping with Robert Stackhouse and Carol Mickett's exhibit coming up at The Art Center in St. Petersburg. This has been a very interesting, educational, and fun project to be a part of. I am very excited to see it come to fruition. It has been very rewarding to work with artists of this caliber. Robert Stackhouse is from here and chooses to make this area his home. Here is the information on the exhibit at The Arts Center as well as two other exhibits in the Tampa Bay area this month of Robert Stackhouse's work.

Ficus elastica

Title: Ficus elastica
Materials: Acrylic on Masonite.
Size: 48 x 24 in.
Year: 2007

This is another large piece that is the same size as Two. I made it around the same time and is kind of a companion piece. Lots of the same colors, techniques, and size. I used the leaves of my ever gigantic rubber plant, Ficus elastica, to get the texture and shapes of the leaves.
